Bio

Welcome to the bio section of neilmcgarry.com, where I tell you about me.

In my long and checkered career I have worn many guises: foot messenger, editorial assistant, legal administrator, technical support monkey, author, technical writer and graphic designer, but in 2007 I decided to go one step further. Following a long-time desire to do stand-up comedy, I read some books, watched some videos, took instruction from the amazing Joey Callahan, and then hit the open mics. When I discovered that telling jokes to drunken crowds late at night is way more fun than any of the jobs I held, I never looked back.

Since my open mic debut in September ’07 I have played at comedy clubs, bars, coffeehouses and nightclubs. I've performed with Joey Callahan, Kelli Dunham, and even opened for the funny lady of folk, Deirdre Flint. I also self-produced four iterations of The 1-4-5 Show, a comedy series that has included fabulous local comedians like Carolyn Busa, Katie Kohler and Jason Pollock.

My comedy is both brainy and silly, ranging from observations about breakfast cereal to ruminations about the horrors of doctor's visits and job-hunting. I specialize in meta-comedy; that is, jokes about comedy itself, which both pleases audiences and makes me feel existential at the same time.
